FTP fills  pretty much the requirements  I was  thinking of  in  my
previous comment. My client linkifies text, so any text file  in an
ftp directory can become a menu.

IMHO theres two things it lacks though:

1)  a form for running queries (filetype 7 in gopher) 
2)  opening of a text file when opening a directory

perhaps 2 can be filled by specifying a banner file, and 1 by a 
executing a remote search. Hmm. I need to do some research.

Otherwise it's perfect, files are processed by my client's mailcap,
just like gopher but without the selector sillyness.
