I recently saw  a phlog where the writer excused  himself for using
the utf-8 charset. Here I make no such excuses. Gopher holes are no
longer confined  to the English  language and as such  require more
characters that the skimpy set supplied by Ascii.

Plus emoticons are cool, right?

However much  retro gopher purists  would only bear using  what was
available in 1995, I believe  that some improvements are welcome.
I'm not advocating using javascript in Gopher, or any of the modern
technologies that make life  an absolute  misery on the web and has 
pushed yours  truly to  investigate saner solutions. But a bit here
and there, with the light touch of  an artist,  can make life better
for everyone without opening the gates of hell.
